A tourism masterplan, detailing the development of an area around Leanachan Forest, has been approved by The Highland Council’s Lochaber Area Committee.
Produced by the Forest Enterprise division of Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), the masterplan could herald a luxury 80 bed hotel, high quality cabins and yurts, as well as improved road access off the A82.
The £25 million resort is set to be developed in the 7,300 acres of the FCS's Leanachan Forest, an area popular with walkers, skiers, and mountain bikers in the shadow of Ben Nevis.
The developments are planned within a number of “zones” across the area designated for development, with the aim to develop a high quality experience for a range of visitors, whilst ensuring all infrastructure is in keeping with the environment.
Ben Lennon, Forest Enterprise Scotland’s district manager for Lochaber said:
“The area being proposed is fantastic and would be a big draw to all visitors who love dramatic landscapes and outdoor activities. The masterplan gives a structured way forward that is sustainable and sensitive to the environment.”
Forest Enterprise and HIE will now work with stakeholders to attract private sector developers and investment.
