Two new destinations Wizz into Glasgow Airport

Low cost airline announces services to Lublin in eastern Poland and Vilnius in Lithuania

Date : 22/04/2015

Low cost airline Wizz Air has announced two new destinations for Glasgow Airport with flights due to begin later in the year.

Glasgow was voted the top destination by Hungarian media who placed the city at the top of their wishlist. Wizz Air’s twice weekly service is scheduled to start in mid-June with direct flights to the Hungarian capital, Budapest.

The budget airline has also announced identical services from Glasgow to Lublin in eastern Poland and Vilnius in Lithuania with flights due to commence this September.

Leader of Glasgow City Council, Gordon Matheson, has commented on the effect this will have on Scotland’s tourism industry. He said: “Wizz Air’s new routes are a real boost for Glasgow. The fact that the people of Budapest voted for a Glasgow service strongly reflects the popularity of our city.

“It is a positive and welcome step from Wizz Air, which provides us with the perfect opportunity to strengthen cultural and business links between both cities and presents us with an even greater scope to grow in-bound tourism”.

The announcement comes shortly after recent passenger figures which revealed that more than 600,000 people travelled through Glasgow Airport last month, a 14% increase on the same period last year.

March was the busiest month on record in the last seven years for the airport which also reported a 22% increase in international traffic, while the country’s capital also enjoyed a 6.8% rise in visitor numbers passing through Edinburgh Airport.

Commenting on the additional routes to Glasgow Airport, business development manager Paul White said: “This is fantastic news for the airport. We are continually working to expand route network and not only will Wizz Air’s new routes further strengthen our connectivity with Europe’s major cities, it has a huge potential to generate significant in-bound tourism for Glasgow”.
