New sleeper service to showcase the Scottish larder

First Minister launches new Caledonian Sleeper train franchise which promises the best of Scottish food and drink to visitors travelling on the service

Date : 31/03/2015

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has helped launch the new Caledonian Sleeper train franchise, which promises world-class hospitality featuring the best of Scottish food and drink to visitors travelling on the cross-border service.

News of the refined dining experience featuring local Scottish produce is a welcome addition to the service, following the launch of the Year of Food and Drink Scotland 2015, a Scottish Government initiative aiming to spotlight, celebrate and promote Scotland’s natural larder.

Described as being a “hotel on wheels” the Sleeper service will feature flat beds, en-suite berths and a Brasserie style Club Car for dining, further enhancing business links as well as tourism to Scotland.

Ms Sturgeon said;“We knew that the routes through Scotland already offered a spectacular backdrop, but we wanted to see the journey become a destination in itself and take a larger tourism role in promoting Scotland.”

The Caledonian Sleeper service between London and Fort William was last year named in the top six railway adventures in the world, placed in the same group as The Shanghai Maglev, the Tren Crucero through the heart of Ecuador and the Sunset Limited between Los Angeles and New Orleans.
