Motherwell to host street cycle event

Motherwell to host a round of the biggest circuit race series in the UK

Date : 02/04/2015

A number of top names in cycling are set to compete in Motherwell when the town hosts a round of the 2015 Pearl Izumi Tour Series cycling event, considered to be the biggest circuit race series in the UK.

The event will see top riders from across the country compete in a fast-paced 1.7km street circuit of the town centre. Team WIGGINS, formed by Tour de France and Olympic winning superstar Sir Bradley Wiggins, and the ONE Pro Cycling team headed up by England cricketer Matt Prior will feature in the race.

The series is made up of 10 different events across the UK, Motherwell being the only Scottish venue, in what will be the fourth race. Previous Scottish legs of the event have been staged at Kirkcaldy, and Edinburgh.

Paul Jukes, executive director of Regeneration and Environmental Services at North Lanarkshire Council said:

“With the success of the Commonwealth Games triathlon and cycling time trials, North Lanarkshire is firmly on the map to host major sporting events. We are delighted to welcome the cyclists and teams to our town.”

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer for EventScotland added:

“The Pearl Izumi Tour Series is a fantastic spectacle and it will bring high octane city-centre racing to Motherwell this year. Scotland is the perfect stage for events and we look forward to seeing some of the country’s top riders competing on a challenging circuit.”

Hosting such an event takes a lot of planning and preparation, with visitors from around the UK expected to arrive for the event. Find out some practical advice for organising you own events by reading Tourism Intelligence Scotland’s Events, Festivals and Cultural Tourism guide.
