A remote beach on Isle of Harris has been ranked as one of the UK’s top beaches in a recent survey by the travel review website, TripAdvisor.
Luskentyre beach, which is situated off the north coast of Scotland, was rated eighth in the country ahead of Hengistbury in Bournemouth and Sandbanks in Poole. It is the only Scottish beach to make the top ten as voted for by visitors.
The beach has previously received global recognition; in 2012, Luskentyre was named as one of the top beaches in the world by Time Magazine; alongside Florida, South Africa and Brazil. It is also highly regarded by Undiscovered Scotland for its “stunning blues and turquoises of the sea set against the near whites of the beaches, the different blues of the skies, the greens of the grass and the greys of the rocks. Coastal scenery really doesn’t come any better than this”.
The island is also part of a £52,000 tourism campaign to draw people to visit the Outer Hebrides and make the most of what it has to offer this spring and summer. Other attractions on the island, such as walking tours and Skoon Art Cafe, have also proven to be popular with visitors.
VisitScotland Chairman Mike Cantlay has commended Luskentyre, saying:
“This is another superb accolade for Luskentyre beach, but its inclusion on the list of best UK beaches is not surprising. This Travellers’ Choice Beaches Award will help further raise the profile of Luskentyre and of Harris, encouraging even more people to visit”.
