A 2000 person survey conducted by the travel agents’ group found 41% people agreed that ‘more capacity is needed’- an increase from 36% in 2013.
A third of people surveyed also felt ‘the UK economy will suffer if capacity is not increased’ – with 18% saying they disagreed.
Focusing on flight taxes, 36% said high flight taxes put them off flying with 25% saying that they would fly from an airport outside the UK to avoid Air Passenger Duty (APD) - such as Amsterdam Schiphol where there is no APD, or Frankfurt where the tax is much lower.
The research has been issued by ABTA to coincide with the release of its Manifesto for Jobs and Growth in Tourism where they are calling for an increase in airport capacity; further reform and a reduction in APD and investment in infrastructure across all transport modes.
