Glasgow Airport had its busiest summer in 6 years with 782,000 passengers travelling through the transport hub in August alone, an increase of 4.9% compared to the same period last year. Figures for June, July and August show almost 2.5 million passengers used the airport which is an increase of 2.8% on last year.
August represented the airport’s 19th consecutive month of growth, when thousands of athletes and officials returned home following the Commonwealth Games, other events which airport officials believe added to their record passenger numbers included the World Pipe Band Championships and the UDO World Street Dance Championships. Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said:
“August was an extremely busy month for the airport and the city. Despite the increase in numbers, it was one of our best summers in terms of operational performance with 99.6% of passengers passing through security in less than 10 minutes during the summer months.”
This increase in passenger numbers follows news that Jet2.com plans to introduce four new routes, including direct flights to Prague, which will see it operate its biggest ever flying programme from Glasgow Airport in 2015. Ryanair also confirmed that from October it will operate direct flights to Carcassone in France and Chania in Crete.
