Several Scottish destinations including the West Highland Way and Corryvreckan Whirlpool feature in a new Lonely Planet book listing the world’s 1000 Ultimate Adventures.

The Loch Ness Marathon, the biggest in Scotland in a rural setting, features in the book’s list of Mind Blowing Marathons globally; and the Fort William Mountain Festival, a celebration of mountain culture in the outdoor capital of the UK, appears in the Best Adventure Festivals experience.

Barra and the Orkney Islands also feature in the book, which has been curated by Lonely Planet’s team of travel experts and aims to inspire and captivate with activities and challenges right across the globe, including scrambling up Table Mountain to enjoy panoramic views of Cape Town and rumbling across the dunes on a camel safari in Rajasthan.

The book includes the world’s most daring, exciting and breathtaking experiences in one collection, accompanied by stunning photography. There is a range of challenges to suit everyone - from travellers looking for their first active trip up to hardcore adrenalin junkies. The book covers a variety of experiences, including sporting feats, waterborne thrills, climbing challenges and wildlife experiences.

Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, said:

ldquo; We are incredibly lucky to live in a country with easy access to such a wide range of adventure sports and pastimes and it comes as no surprise to me that so many Scottish locations are featured in this new book as must-visit destinations for thrill-seekers."

Scotland features in no less than 20 of the top 100 top ten lists and the country is heralded for its treks, mountains and festivals. The Borders are selected as one of the world’s top ‘Mountain Biking Meccas’ for the Seven Stanes’“worldwide reputation for high quality, manmade, all-weather trails,” whilst the West Highland Way’s “wild and precipitous mountains” place it in the ‘Best Treks with Killer Views’ list.
