Focus on festivals - July

If the Commonwealth Games aren???t enough to satisfy your visitors in July, there are plenty more events going on across Scotland.

For live shows with real magic, look no further than the Edinburgh International Festival of Magic, running from 27 June to 4 July. Events are taking place in venues across the city including the Camera Obscura and the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

Visitors with theatrical kids should head to Fife for the National Festival of Youth Theatre, 4-7 July. It’s the largest annual gathering of youth theatres in the UK with twelve main performance stages plus a series of high-energy workshops.

Historic Scone Palace near Perth is the picturesque setting for the 26th Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Scottish Game Fair from 4-6 July where there’ll be hands-on activities, demonstrations and a busy food hall and cookery theatre.

Comic books are big business, so expect fans from across the UK and beyond to be heading to Glasgow Comic Con, Scotland’s Comic Book Festival, on 5-6 July, where artists and writers will be speaking and signing.

The Shetland Nature Festival, 5-11 July, celebrates the wild magic of Shetland’s land, sea and sky with a packed programme of guided walks, hands-on events, craft workshops, sea cliff climbing, snorkelling tours and lots more.

On 20 July you can get up close to hundreds of horses, from Shetlands to Clydesdales, and watch them compete at the Heavy Horse Show at the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride.

At the end of the month, 30 July to 2 August, Aberdeen hosts the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, where visitors can enjoy dance galas, street parades, classical music concerts, opera and more by young performers from across the world.

Throughout July and August, visitors to Skye will find the island alive with concerts, theatre and film nights, walks, exhibitions and a host of other community events as part of The Skye Festival.

Last but not least, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow kick off on 23 July. Visit the official website for full details of events, venues, ticketing, transport and information about all the different sports taking place.
