Extra million to attract business tourism in Scotland

Extra million allocated to help attract major international conferences to Scotland

Date : 09/12/2014

An extra million pounds has been allocated for next year to help attract major international conferences to Scotland, following research showing a previous spend of £1.4 million helped generate £143million for the economy.

The money will be made available through the Scottish Government's Conference Bid Fund which will match contributions from Scottish destinations bidding to host eligible conferences in 2015/16.

Enterprise Minister Fergus Ewing made the announcement at a VisitScotland business tourism conference and discussed the details of the fund during a debate in the Scottish Parliament about the success of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, which brought 690,000 visitors to Scotland spending £282m during Glasgow 2014.

MSPs praised the organisation of the Games and the people of Glasgow for ensuring the thousands of visitors had a special experience.
