It’s so much nicer to stay home

Staycations are a great way to take a fresh look at what’s close to home or enjoy one of Scotland’s major events.

When we feel the pinch of recession but still need a break from the daily grind, a staycation is the answer. More and more people are rediscovering the treasures near to home and taking day trips to big events.

Local luxury

According to recent Trip Advisor trend data, the staycation is continuing to prove popular as a holiday choice. Trip Advisor research found that six British destinations are in the top 15 global list. Not only that but British holiday-makers are opting for more luxurious accommodation, with 46 percent of travellers seeking 4 star accommodation. You can read more about the results on the VisitScotland website.

Big events

These findings were reflected in a recent Barclays research report which speculates that major events like the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup together with a huge number of Homecoming 2014 events, are having a big impact on Scottish tourism. Travelodge carries out an annual staycation report amongst UK travellers which backs up the Trip Advisor findings. It found that the percentage of Britons taking a staycation has increased steadily for the last four years to 74 percent.

The top three types of staycations were coastal holidays (40 percent), city breaks (37 percent) and rural breaks (28 percent). Edinburgh was the third most popular destination, behind London and Cornwall.

The trend is turning towards lots of short breaks, instead of one big annual holiday, with over half taking several mini-breaks throughout the year.
