Date : 10/03/2014

VisitScotland, in partnership with Perth & Kinross Council, is organising a free event for Scottish local authorities to discover how they can maximise on the opportunities presented by one of the world’s biggest golfing tournaments, The Ryder Cup.

To help local authorities throughout Scotland engage with The Ryder Cup, the event will take place at Murrayshall House Hotel and Golf Courses in Perth, on Friday 21 March, where attendees will hear about the work taking place to plan and deliver this global event, as well as the opportunities that are available.

Speakers will include: EventScotland’s Ryder Cup Project Director, Robbie Clyde and Ryder Cup Marketing Manager, Alan Grant. The Scottish Golf Union will also present their activities and this will be followed by a Q&A session.

Scotland aims to host the best-ever Ryder Cup when it takes place at Gleneagles in September 2014, only the second time the event has been held on Scottish soil, as well as promoting the country to hundreds of millions of potential visitors across the world. The Ryder Cup provides a unique opportunity to reposition golf in the country, both in terms of tourism, and engagement at a local level with communities right across Scotland.

In order for every part of the country to benefit, effective partnerships between VisitScotland and local authorities are vital – golf tourism is worth £220m to Scotland annually and supports around 4,400 jobs. In fact, every £1 spent on green fees generates a further £5 on extras such as hotels, restaurants and retail.

Malcolm Roughead, Chief Executive of VisitScotland said:

“The 2014 Ryder Cup is one of the biggest events ever to take place in Scotland and it is vital to have the support of local authorities across the country in order to fully realise the benefits of such an event. More than 250,000 spectators will attend over the course of the week and although they may be coming for The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, they will be staying and spending both time and money throughout Scotland.

“It’s essential that we continue to build effective partnerships between VisitScotland and local authorities to ensure the success of this wonderful tournament is felt in every part of the country.”

The event is open to all local authorities in Scotland and is free to attend.
