Destination Leaders Programme Open for 2014 Applications

The Destination Leaders programme is a unique opportunity to build a new leadership model for Scottish tourism.

Date : 24/01/2014

Based on an internationally acclaimed initiative originating from Melbourne, Australia, the Destination Leaders programme is a unique opportunity to build a new leadership model for Scottish tourism.

Delivered by the Edinburgh Institute, part of the Edinburgh Napier University Business School, and funded by Scottish Enterprise, the programme works with the St Andrews Partnership and the Edinburgh Tourism Action Group.

Participants play an active role in helping position Edinburgh and St Andrews as world leading tourism destinations. Twenty participants are currently successfully studying in the first delivery of the DLP. Now in its second year, the next programme will commence in October 2014 and run till March 2015.

This programme will provide delegates with a unique strategic overview of the tourism industry, equipping them with leadership and management skills, and the opportunity to learn from international best practice. They will develop insights and a shared understanding of the relationships across different destination elements of the industry (e.g. visitor attractions, transport, accommodation, retail, food and drink, culture, festivals and events, and venues).

This programme seeks to expand and enhance delegates’ peer networks, helping them to become part of a strong and growing Alumni of Destination Leaders.

Who is it for?

This programme is designed for tourism industry leaders from public and private sector organisations based in the Edinburgh and St Andrews area. Current participants include representatives from Edinburgh Airport, Apex Hotels, Mercat Tours and other Operators, Visitor Attractions and Public Sector Agencies from St Andrews and Edinburgh.

David Wilson, Chief Operating Officer at Edinburgh Airport, who is involved in the programme, said working together and sharing information is key to continuing the city’s success in tourism.

He said: “The DLP is a fantastic opportunity for business leaders to come together for the common purpose of improving and promoting growth in the destination and their collective businesses.”
